SHAWL
Ch 4.
First Half (Increase)
On the first half of the Shawl, you will always increase one stitch on every row along one side edge.

Row 1: Work 2 dc in 4th ch from hook (3 skipped ch count as first dc) – you will have 3 dc.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc on this row and on all following rows), turn, dc in first dc (increase made), dc in next dc, dc in top of beg ch – 4 dc.

Row 3: Ch 3, turn, sk first dc, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in top of beg ch – 5 dc.

Row 4: Ch 3, turn, dc in first dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top of beg ch – 6 dc.

Row 5: Ch 3, turn, sk first dc, dc in each dc across, 2 dc in top of beg ch – 7 dc.

Row 6: Ch 3, turn, dc in first dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top of beg ch – 6 dc.

Row 7: Ch 3, turn, sk first dc, dc in each dc across, 2 dc in top of beg ch – 7 dc.

Rep Rows 12-21 until piece measures about 30 in. (76 cm) from beg, end with a Row 21 as the last row you work.

Last Row (Center of the shawl): Ch 3, turn, sk first dc, dc in next dc, *dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc; rep from * across, dc in top of beg ch. Note: This row does not increase the number of sts.

Second Half (Decrease)
On the second half of the shawl, you will always decrease one stitch on every row along the same side edge that increases were made on the first half.

Row 1: Ch 3, turn, sk first dc, dc in next dc, *ch 1, sk next dc, dc in next dc; rep from * to last 2 dc and beg ch, ch 1, sk next dc, dc2tog.

Row 2: Ch 3, turn, sk first st, dc2tog, *ch 1, sk next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc; rep from * across, dc in top of beg ch.

Row 3: Ch 3, turn, sk first dc, dc in next dc, *dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc; rep from * to last ch-1 sp, dc in next ch-1 sp, dc2tog.

Row 4: Ch 3, turn, sk first st, dc2tog, *ch 1, sk next dc, dc in next dc; rep from * across, dc in top of beg ch.

****Row 5 (ROW 7 in pattern): Ch 3, turn, sk first dc, dc in next dc, *dc in next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc; rep from * to last ch-1 sp, dc in next ch-1 sp, dc2tog.

Rep Rows 5-14 until only 7 sts remain (1 dctog, 4 dc and 2 ch-1 sps) in last row worked, end with a Row 16 as the last row you work.

Next Row: Ch 3, turn, sk first dc, (dc in next dc, dc in next ch-1 sp) twice, dc2tog
– 6 sts.

Next Row: Ch 3, turn, sk first st, dc2tog, dc in each dc across, dc in top of beg ch – 5 sts.
